Dr. Fan Yang

Co-founder of Cho/Yang Piano Studio

Dr. Yang entered the Shanghai Conservatory at age ten. In the same year, she won the first prize in the Shanghai Youth Piano Competition and received the Best Performance Prize. Shortly after, she was invited to make recordings of Chinese contemporary composers and also Brahms Transcriptions with the Shanghai Conservatory Orchestra. Her performance activities also include a concert tour in Japan with the Chinese Youth Performance Ensemble and a concerto appearance with The Shanghai Radio Symphony at the Shanghai Concert Hall. She studied with Prof. Minjuan Fan, Qinghua Wang and Qingfeng Chen.

​In 1997, Yang was awarded a full scholarship to study with Prof. Sedmara Rutstein at Oberlin Conservatory. At Oberlin, She garnered the school’s top awards in piano performance: The Rudolf Serkin Prize, the John Elvin Prize, the Faustina Hurlbutt Prize, and the Pi Kappa Lambda Prize. In 2001, Dr. Yang entered The Manhattan School of Music as a full scholarship student of Dr. Arkady Aronov. During her study in New York, her excellence in music was recognized in the reception of honors and awards such as the Roy M. Rubinstein Prize and the David G. Whitcomb Foundation Award: she was also appointed as a teaching assistant to Dr. Aronov at the Manhattan School of Music.

​Dr. Yang was also frequently invited to participate at prestigious music festivals such as the Meranofest in Italy and Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. Her concert engagement has taken her around the world includes Japan, China, and Italy. She has been featured in concerto performances with the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Radio Symphony, Oberlin Symphony Orchestra, and Huainan Symphony Orchestra.

​In addition to her distinction as a performer, Dr. Yang also demonstrated excellence in teaching. Her doctoral thesis " Czerny’s Opus 740 and Its Related Techniques” focuses on the development of both mental and physical aspects of the piano technique. She was also invited to give recitals, lectures, and masterclasses at the Steinway Society of Bay Area in San Jose, California. She serves as a jury in the CMTANC International Youth Music Competition.

Mr. Sung-Min Cho

Director, Co-founder of Cho/Yang Piano Studio

Sung-Min Cho performed at major concert venues in the U.S including a solo recital at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, as well as in Asia and Europe.

​Born in Korea, where he started playing piano at the age of five. He then immigrated to the U.S in his late teenage years in order to undertake professional training to become a classical pianist. His training as a pianist combines deep and authentic traditions in German and Russian school of piano playing through working with several renowned pianists/teachers.

​Studied at the Juilliard School Pre-College Division with Joseph Raieff and Katherine Parker. Then earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Piano Performance at the Manhattan School of Music studying with Nina Svetlanova. Further studies include vocal accompanying and coaching with Donal Nold as well as Post-Graduate study at NYU with Miyoko Nakaya Lotto who has been his mentor ever since.
